The trombone is a unique instrument in the brass family as it operates by the use of a slide rather than valves. By far the most common student instrument is the tenor trombone. The tenor trombone is known as a small bore instrument as the bore (inside diameter) is around 12 mm. This is good for a beginner as it does not require a large amount of air to produce a good tone. It is a relatively simple instrument and the quality and durability of the slide is an important factor in the performance of the instrument.
